Avapro side effects

Avapro is a prescription medication for the treatment of high blood pressure and kidney problems caused by Type 2 Diabetes, which are not insulin-dependent.  The medicine is known to prevent blood vessels from narrowing improving the blood flow in the process.  Avapro belongs to a category of drugs known as Angiotensin II receptor blockers, which are known to bring down the effectiveness of a chemical in the body called Angiotensin II, which is responsible for making the blood vessels become narrow.  However, much as it is effective, one should also have knowledge about Avapro side effects since it is a prescription medication.

Here are the more common side-effects of Avapro:

  1. Drowsy, tired feeling
  2. Runny or stuffy nose
  3. Diarrhea or stomach upset
  4. Mild skin itch or rash
  5. Headache, dizziness and nausea

The serious side effects, which does involve immediate medical attention includes:

  1. Fainting or extreme nausea
  2. Increased heartbeat and chest pain
  3. Swelling of the hands and feet
  4. Difficulty and/or pain while passing urine.

Some of the other allergic reactions or side effects that are rare include muscle pain or cramps, vision changes, tightness in the chest, persistent tiredness and yellowing of the eyes or the skin.  You may also choose to report the side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088

You should seek emergency medical help and alert the doctor in case you notice difficulty while breathing, swelling of the face, lips, neck and tongue and hives on the skin.  In rare cases, Avapro can also trigger a condition that can lead to the breakdown of the skeletal muscle tissue that regresses towards kidney failure.  Do not take the medication when you are consuming alcohol because it can increase the possibility of side effects and reduce the effectiveness of the medicine in treating high blood pressure or the kidney problem. You should also tell the doctor if you are already on medication taking a blood thinner like warfarin, a diuretic (water pill) or digoxin as these can interact with Avapro.  Do not be hesitant about telling your doctor about the prescription or over the counter medications that you already take including herbal medicine so that there is no room for unhealthy reactions.
